Georges Trubert began his career around 1467 in Provence at the court of Duke René I of Anjou, titular king of Naples. The king's accounts mention Trubert frequently, noting that he was honored with the title of Valet de Chambre and received funds to travel to Rome. After King René's death in 1480, Trubert continued his career in Provence. But by 1491 he was working for René's grandson, René II, duke of Lorraine. Probably trained in the Loire valley, Trubert incorporated the innovations of both contemporary Italian panel painters and Flemish artists. Although artists of this period often worked on both secular and religious commissions, Trubert's work survives only in Christian liturgical and devotional manuscripts.
