Along with Timothy O'Sullivan and Alexander Gardner, John Reekie made photographs for the Mathew Brady studio in Washington, D.C. Brady was notorious for not giving credit to individual photographers and instead stamping all photographs that emerged from his studio with his own name. This practice may account for the dearth of information about Reekie; Gardner, however, credited him with seven images, all views made in Virginia, in his Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. John Reekie is best known for topographical views and documentary photographs of the American Civil War.
