active:about 1475 - about 1485 probably Bruges Illuminator Flemish
The Master of the Soane Josephus is named for the illuminations of a copy of a text by the Roman author Josephus, now owned by the Sir John Soane's Museum in London. The artist regularly contributed miniatures to deluxe copies of large secular volumes in the years around 1480. The Master of the Soane Josephus employed a bright and varied palette, fluid brushwork, and typically executed figures with broad, flat faces, and sharp noses. The fact that the artist collaborated with the Master of Edward IV and the Master of the Getty Froissart suggests that he too was based in Bruges.
