Grand Tourists prized Lusieri’s masterfully detailed technique. This classic view of Saint Peter’s from the slopes of Monte Mario is executed entirely in black chalk. With it, Lusieri brilliantly captures the Roman sun’s radiant effects. For many travelers, a view from Monte Mario was their introduction to Rome as they approached the city.
