An eighteenth-century clock such as this one was a collaborative effort of numerous craftsmen. The clockmaker, in this case the king's own clockmaker Julien Le Roy, produced only the movement. Le Roy would have commissioned a sculptor to design the elaborate model, a bronze caster to produce the bronze case, and a gilder to chase and gild it. The enamel clock dial was then painted and fired separately by a specialized enameler, Antoine-Nicolas Martinière.
