Initial P: Saint Paul; Initial P: A Bishop Giving a Letter to a Messenger
Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy (Place Created)
Tempera colors, gold leaf, and ink on parchment
Ms. Ludwig I 11 (83.MA.60), fol. 501
Leaf: 37.5 × 24.8 cm (14 3/4 × 9 3/4 in.)
In the initial P at the top of the page, Paul passes a scroll to a messenger who will convey the author's letter to the Philippians, as a bishop, who stands between them, looks on. The monk writing on a scroll in the initial P at lower left suggests the manuscript's monastic origins--it was probably created in a monastic scriptorium and originally used by a community of monks in Bologna, where it was made.
