Odilon Redon (French, 1840 - 1916)
France (Place Created)
Charcoal and pastel on brown paper
52 × 36 cm (20 1/2 × 14 3/16 in.)
A large nimbus floats in a glowing cosmic space. Its black circular center is a male head, partly shadowed and with eyes closed, sunk in deep dreaming sleep. The nimbus is rendered in delicate strokes of powdery charcoal over which Redon has added dots of cobalt blue pastel.
