Object Description

Japanese artist Shinjiro Nakamura (中村 新次郎) produced two virtually identical portraits of J. Paul Getty; see also 2003.94. Getty, gazing contemplatively to the side, is seated on a wooden chair with a desk covered with papers behind him. In this version, the desk and paneling in the background are more detailed and Getty’s face is fuller with more color in his cheeks. It is unclear which portrait was made first, but this may be the more finished version. Nakamura’s paintings were created sometime before or during 1965 since they are listed in Getty’s ledger for his personal art collection in that year.
