Girolamo di Benvenuto

Dates(Sienese), 1470 - 1524

Son and pupil of Benvenuto di Giovanni, Girolamo di Benvenuto was probably active in his father's studio from the late 1480s. Girolamo created frescoes as well as panel paintings and collaborated with his father so frequently that it is often difficult to determine who painted which images.

In Siena in the 1400s, artistic fashion was changing more slowly than in Florence; Sienese artists and patrons were less interested than their Florentine contemporaries in systematic pursuits of perspective or the naturalistic backgrounds that would become the norm in Renaissance art. Set against rich, gold grounds, the scenery in Benvenuto's paintings, like that of other Sienese artists, displays his strong feeling for nature.
