Christian Möllinger

DatesPrussian, 1754 - 1826

Christian Mollinger became the most celebrated member of a large family of clockmakers. He rose to become the Chief Court Clockmaker at the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. He specialized in clocks fitted with flute and organ pipes, but he also produced a number of astronomical clocks. A precision pendulum clock that Mollinger built in 1787 served as the main timekeeper for the city of Berlin until 1903.

In an effort to synchronize the time of all the tower clocks in Berlin, Mollinger studied their irregular mechanisms and published a short work suggesting how to improve them. He also produced a small handbook for the amateur clockmaker.
