Hischylos

RolesPotter
NationalityGreek (Attic)

Hischylos was a potter of cups, especially bilingual ones, which he made expressly to be decorated by vase-painters who combined the traditional black-figure technique with the relatively newer red-figure technique. One of these painters--who signed his name Epiktetos on three cups that Hischylos potted--is considered to be one of the most distinguished cup-painters of his generation.

Hischylos's potter-signature appears on seventeen cups. Thirteen are bilingual, most incorporating large eyes as a decorative and apotropaic (magical) device.
