The Proto-Panaitian Group is made up of several vase painters, all of whom reflect a common stylistic sensibility. The terracotta vases and cups they created incorporate more elaborate features and anatomy than their predecessors, the Pioneer Group. Their subjects were most often young male athletes, whom the artists frequently described as "beautiful" in Greek text captions. Even girls, although rarely depicted, had a boyish look.
