Jules-Hughes Rousseau and his younger brother Jean-Siméon Rousseau de la Rottière represented the third generation of a family of decorative painters and sculptors. Creating a new style with grotesque ornament influenced by ancient Roman wall paintings, the brothers designed their painted and carved decoration together so that one complemented the other. For example, painted medallions by Jean-Siméon imitated his brother's carvings or bas-reliefs. The brothers are particularly known for their work at the palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau.
