From 1922 until 1927, Erich Consemüller studied at the Bauhaus School, where his primary emphasis was carpentry. He assisted in the expansion of the Bauhaus and created a photographic document of school interiors and students' work. Consemüller made furniture and later became deputy director of the building department.

After leaving the Bauhaus, Consemüller taught in the architecture department at the school for applied arts in Halle an der Saale. Fired from his teaching post and excluded from various artistic activities by the Nazis, Consemüller worked in several architects' offices and in 1946 was made town planner in Halle.
