Vicompte Joseph de Vigier studied photography in Paris with Gustave Le Gray and became a founding member of the Société Héliographique in 1851. After traveling to Spain and the Pyrenees mountains during the summer of 1853, Vigier published an album of the landscape and view photographs he had made there.

In 1854 Vigier was among the founding members of the Société Française de Photographie; he was later appointed as a board member. He exhibited his photographs of the Dauphiné region and the Château de Savigny at the Société's Salons.
