Research Assistant, Collection Development, Getty Research Institute (part-time)

The Collection Development department of the Getty Research Institute is seeking a Research Assistant to assist the Curator of Rare Books. Will assist curator by conducting research, writing and other curatorial work related to acquisitions, exhibitions, publications and presentations. MA/Ph.D. candidate/degree in either Art History, Early Modern History, Classics, Library Science or a related humanities field with strong skills and facility in navigating a major research library. Reading knowledge of at least two European languages essential and knowledge of Latin highly desirable, as is previous experience in dealing with rare books and primary archival materials. Strong computer skills a must, especially a ready ease in dealing with on-line research databases. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and Powerpoint a plus. Assistant Archivist, Institutional Records and Archives, Getty Research Institute.

The Assistant Archivist assists in the day-to-day operations of the Institutional Records and Archives department, which provides institution-wide records management and archival services. Reporting to the Institutional Archives Manager, primary duties include the arrangement and description of historical records and the management of physical and digital collections. The Assistant Archivist will also assist in a project to appraise approximately 4,000 linear feet of paper records and will be involved with accessioning, reference, digital project management, planning and policy development, and records management activities. The Assistant Archivist may supervise and review the work of interns and non-professional assistants. ALA-accredited MLS degree with specialization in archives administration or M.A. in history with archival concentration required; 2-3 years full-time equivalent professional experience; demonstrated experience in arrangement and description of organizational records according to national and international standards; excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills. Must be able to lift 40 lb. boxes and carry them up and down ladders repeatedly over the course of a single day. Library Assistant II, Interlibrary Loan, Research Services, The Getty Research Institute

Library Assistant will primarily assist with interlibrary loan (ILL) lending activities, processing requests, photocopying, and packing /unpacking materials with other projects as assigned as time permits including ILL borrowing activities and occasional duties at UCLA pulling books for Getty staff and scholars. LA II will also spend time staffing the ILL desk, answering user queries, and providing instruction on use of equipment, including photocopiers, computers, printers, audio-visual equipment and microfilm readers. Undergraduate degree in art history or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Reading knowledge of 1 Western European language preferred. 1-2 years experience library or related experience with interlibrary loan preferred. Experience with ILLiad and OCLC strongly preferred. Experience with on-line bibliographic databases preferred. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required. Position is part-time, 22 hours per week. Hours are somewhat flexible but applicant must be available to work at least 3 days per week, M W F preferred, beginning by 10am. LEADING CANDIDATE IDENTIFIED.

Research Assistant, Collection Development, Getty Research Institute

To conduct research in art historical primary sources for purposes of exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, programs, and presentations. Exhibitions work includes assistance in planning the forthcoming "Fluxus Means Change" exhibition to be proposed and scheduled. Assistance with programs includes the planned 2009 CAA Session on Artists Books. The job focuses on art historical research in the special collections and on research in published and online sources; preparing information for data entry into the exhibition database; preparation of object lists; and requests for photography. Qualifications: Experience with special collections research. MA/PhD candidate in art history or the humanities. Good reading knowledge of French and German.
